OK, dragonarse- now I found what you were telling me about!! From PSP IGN:
Back in the mystifying early days of the PlayStation Portable, Sony Online Entertainment was one of the first game developers to commit to the system. An independent entity from Sony Computer Entertainment, SOE's flagship title EverQuest was assumed to be one of the first projects for the team. The PSP's WiFi online capabilities were not expected to be ready in time for launch back then (and is still in development, although Sony has the basic infrastructure for online connectivity already in place and waiting a challenger), so rumors went flying that the company was developing an offline brawler based on the series, like its Champions of Norrath series.
What has come out of the fog, after what's seemed like eons of waiting, is something a little different as well as a little familiar. SOE has decided to go beyond EverQuest for its first PSP game, to create an all-new saga called Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade. Its heavy action gameplay will appeal to fans of Champions, but the gameplay and story is entirely new, and development on the game is being handled by a new team and with new development tools. The effort is to make this first PSP outing a unique experience that makes full use of Sony's new handheld. And it is scheduled to release at launch time, along with the PSP itself in North America.
"We have assembled a top-notch development team that has worked hard to develop a completely original title for the PSP handheld system," said John Smedley, president, Sony Online Entertainment. "The dev team has tailored every feature such as the wireless multiplayer gameplay, stunning 3D graphics, and the entertaining Action RPG gameplay specifically for the PSP handheld system, and the results are absolutely spectacular."
The untold legends of Untold Legends begin in a city called Aven. Evil has taken hold of the rest of the world, and the darkness has at last circled around this lone virtuous land. As one of several heroes called upon to stop the evil spreading, you will venture forth into the heart of the darkness, seeking to destroy the hideous beasts in command of the darkness, and perhaps unravel the mystery behind this relentless evil siege.
The RPG side of the game is an open epic, with randomly-generated elements of the game map to offer constant challenge. Players can create and fully customize their character from four player classes: the battle-hardened Knight, the crafty Alchemist, the conjuror Druids, and the wild hunters known as the Berzerker (or Wilding). Players will trek across over 100 levels, collecting literally hundreds of items, magic artifacts and other equipment. On the action side, Untold Legends gets brutal with your characters battling wily enemy creatures and gigantic bosses. Players can use magic as well as typical hack-and-slash techniques, and every element of your character's skill set will be challenged along the way as the game's self-customizing structure tosses new battles at you all the time. The game is designed around WiFi multiplayer, and while no player cap has been announced, the furious co-op gameplay of other action-RPGs in this vein has us excited to get into this mode on the new portable.
Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade will debut in playable form at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, which kicks off tomorrow, so be sure to check back in for full impressions. The first screens of the game are available on the media page below (all of which are zoomed right into the action -- a good way to show off the game's impressive graphics, although we're hoping to see some wider camera angles in the final so we can make the most of our ranged magic attacks), and some new character art is also added to the archive.
